Estimation of Sedimentary Rock Porosity Using a Digital Image Analysis

Pore space characterisation is important in assessing the strength and hydraulic characteristics of rock. This paper proposes a new relationship to estimate porosity natural rocks using data from scanning electron microscope (SEM) pore crack analysis system (PCAS). The obtained results were compared with series conventional mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP) experiments. Three different rocks, namely siltstone, sandstone, coal, collected depth below 400 m, investigated this study. indicated that proposed method digital could accurately identify size values, which agreement experimental data. between two-dimensional estimated three-dimensional laboratory experiments was established. A few limitations on use have also been identified discussed.
